General Info
Daniel B. Sims, MD, is the Medical Director of the Moses Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at Montefiore and Associate Professor of Medicine at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Since joining the Montefiore team, his clinical focus has been the treatment of patients with acute and chronic heart failure due to multiple kinds of cardiomyopathy such as dilated, hypertrophic and restrictive, among others. He also cares for patients with myocarditis, left ventricular assist devices and cardiac transplants.In 1999, Dr. Sims received his Bachelor of Arts in History at Yale University. He then attended Emory University School of Medicine, where he received his Doctor of Medicine in 2003. Dr. Sims began his postgraduate training in 2003 with a three-year internship and residency in internal medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, becoming Chief Resident from 2006 to 2007. Following this, Dr. Sims continued his training at the New York Presbyterian Hospital – Columbia University Medical Center and completed a three-year fellowship in cardiovascular diseases and became Chief Cardiology Fellow in his final year. In 2011, Dr. Sims completed a fellowship in advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation at the same institution.Dr. Sims’ research focuses on a number of topics, including the delivery of cardiac critical care and improving outcomes in the CICU and the use of temporary mechanical circulatory support with intra-aortic balloon pumps, Impella, percutaneous heart pumps, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) pumps and other devices to treat cardiogenic shock. He also aims to improve left ventricular assist device patient and heart transplant patient survival. His work has been published in a number of peer-reviewed journals and books.Dr. Sims is a Fellow of the American Heart Association (AHA) and is a member of the AHA’s Acute Cardiac Care Committee of the Council on Clinical Cardiology. He is a member of the AHA, the American College of Cardiology and the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation. Additionally, Dr. Daniel Sims is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease as well as Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant.
