General Info

For the past 13 years I have been working professionally with dogs, cats, parrots, and other small animals, using positive reinforcement training. “Training” is just another word for “teaching.” Fur and Feather Works is primarily positive reinforcement training; the same method zoos, sanctuaries and trained animal shows use to teach basic care behaviors and tricks. There is no force, coercion, pain or intimidation involved in positive reinforcement training (ever try to put a choke chain on an orca?) – but, it is not magic! I work hard to stay abreast of the latest research in the behavioral sciences for all species.Anyone can learn to train an animal – to elicit desired behaviors and to modify or extinguish problem behaviors. “Positive” does not mean “permissive!” I have a degree in psychology, am certified as Knowledge Assessed through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, and am a Certified Nose Work Instructor. I’m also a professional member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, a commercial member of the American Federation of Aviculture, a charter member of The Pet Professional Guild, and a member Association of Animal Behavior Professionals. I also have years of experience in various forms of (human) teaching and tutoring. Because of my experience and because I work hard to stay current in the latest techniques and research, I have a thorough understanding of behavior and psychology, and the ability to apply it seamlessly to improve the animal/human relationship. I live in Reno, and I currently share my home with two Amazon parrots, a cockatiel, a Dutch bunny, and one very patient Australian Cattle dog. With the exception of one of my birds, they are all rescues.
