I had read the great reviews about this church and am in need of a good, bible-based church, so I decided to check out The Lighthouse church in Tulsa, OK. When I arrived, I noticed that the majority of the men were dressed in suits; the ladies in dresses. I felt a little out of place in my jeans and tennis shoes, but they're all I have and I know that, as the bible tells us, "God judges the heart while man judges by appearance." Still, the people were genuinely warm and very friendly. Very good people there. And then I noticed that none of the women wore ANY makeup...at all. And what struck me as extremely odd was the fact that just about EVERY woman, including young teen girls, wore their hair up in buns! I began to wonder whether this church is seeped in legalism, the opposite of true Christianity. Then, the pastor gave his sermon...sadly, he only delivered HALF the true Gospel of Jesus Christ. His words were full of sin-consciousness, of fire and brimstone, which DO have their place...BUT....We know that it is the LAW that shows man he is a sinner in need of a Savior. This is true. But the other half of the Gospel, the "Good News" part, is an encouragement to the sinner...that although we cannot earn our way to God (Ephesians 2:8-9), we have a Savior, Jesus Christ, Who paid our sin-debt in full on the cross. Salvation is not of works but of grace through faith in Christ. Sadly, the pastor preached only the Law. His words at one point in the sermon were, "If you don't wear the right clothes, say the right words and do the right things, you aren't going to make it to heaven!" He made no mention of Christ, of redemption. He made it very clear that we had to put our lives under a microscope in order to win God's favor, micromanaging every detail. There is no freedom in this thinking. And it negates the need for the Cross of Christ. It is self righteousness to think that our salvation depends upon what we wear, do and say. True, we must live holy lives if we say we love the Lord. But regardless of how good we are, it will never be good enough. I'm very concerned that this pastor's focus on the work of man will lead many to the Cross of Christ but will only frustrate them, resulting in many to turn from Christianity, because they simply will never be perfect.
I believe that the pastor's heart is in the right place, but I strongly believe that he is proclaiming a false doctrine...
One more thing...this church denies the Deity of the Holy Spirit. But if they would just read their bibles more closely.....1 John 5:7 "For there are THREE that bare witness in heaven; the Father, the Word and the Holy Ghost, and these THREE are ONE." Throughout the bible, the Holy Spirit is never referred to as an "it" but as "HE". And the bible also tells us that the Holy Spirit can be "grieved"...IF he were merely the generic "spirit" of God, and not a "person" of the Triune Godhead (Trinity), then He would have no feelings nor would He be distinguised as "He". And let's remember, Jesus said He had to leave so the "Comforter" could come. Jesus left and was with the Father when the Comforter showed up at Pentecost...it was not our beloved Jesus but the Holy Spirit that was there, giving utterance in different tongues, to the disciples.
Anyway, my heart was deeply saddened today...I love the people and the pastor there at the Lighthouse...but I cannot attend another service if another Gospel is being preached. God bless them all.
