While working for others, Wayne recognized the lack of customer care and professional service at some repair shops. "I've heard it all, " he said. "Customers often tell me about being over charged or scared into authorizing repairs that weren't necessary." So when he opened Performance Auto Care in 1999, he began working hard to please his customers. "One of my goals is to offer service and prices beyond customers ; expectations, " he said. To prove it, Performance Auto stands behind its work by offering 12, 000-mile 12 month warrantees and by offering the best price in town. "We will beat any shop's written estimate, " he said. Other customer benefits include towing, detailing, Saturday hours, a shuttle service, senior discounts, manufactures' leased car maintenance packages, and free maintenance and safety inspections ( no purchase necessary ). The formula worked. Performance Auto became so busy so quickly that in October 2000 the company had to move to a larger shop with more equipment and a larger waiting room to accommodate new and repeat customers. When Performance Auto moved, it stayed in Westland, Wayne's hometown. "Working in my hometown makes a difference to me, " said Wayne. More comfortable with people who are literally his neighbors, Wayne feels more driven to server them right because Westland residents are old high school buddies, family, neighbors, and people he runs into at the grocery store or in lines at his bank.
